I replied indeed it was - a commissioned painting created in 1987 of the view from the roof of the offices of a large public relations firm where I'd worked for many years, the last 13 of them in the word processing/desktop publishing department 4pm-midnight shift so that I could paint during the day. </div><div dir="auto" style="text-align: start;"> </div><div dir="auto" style="text-align: start;">I explained all and offered a price I'd be willing to pay, explaining that most working artists do not have a resale value and if this painting would go to auction it would probably not fetch what it was worth. Corporations often deaccession their collections upon a merger, a move or a closing. Museums regularly reevaluate their holdings and they too often move works along, especially the many that are in storage, rarely if ever to be on view. Art, once it leaves the studio takes on a life of its own. The client accepted my offer and the painting was returned with some areas that required touch-ups. I let the art advisor know, she let the client know and below is the response I received - needless to say I was delighted.</div><div dir="auto" style="text-align: start;"> </div></div><div class="x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a"><div dir="auto" style="text-align: start;"><i>"In the spirit of being a former employee we would like to gift the piece back to Sharon Florin and appreciate her generous offer. Of course, the view has changed dramatically with all of the new construction projects that have taken place since this was painted but I find myself looking at it remembering the work I was doing over 30 years ago and marvel that this painting has held its own and stood the test of time. A happy ending.</div></div><div class="x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a"><div dir="auto" style="text-align: start;"><br /></div></div></span></div></div></div></div><p style="text-align: center;"></p>SJFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03937836189978908532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5970944483188202199.post-37024247827924948712024-01-10T07:24:00.000-08:002024-01-10T07:24:16.350-08:00First sale of 2024<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2dIRnxLN7trQB7AxuoQfhNGiu9Ra945CCLNbY7NnaWM-qCOHe7cDnB0yMoQjecw6Kbhyphenhyphen6Yh_ozybpC1azY4LzvCGl6gWt-286yvIeAPI_Ps-J8NCdmoOkuW8dT9i_EKC7ab0fOg668zyMXNEhOAIVTNdE90kiJKcepj3WTHath-2_FRcVFqjXtNZ1pzks/s432/Florin_Paramount%20Reflections%20I%20copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="432" data-original-width="363" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2dIRnxLN7trQB7AxuoQfhNGiu9Ra945CCLNbY7NnaWM-qCOHe7cDnB0yMoQjecw6Kbhyphenhyphen6Yh_ozybpC1azY4LzvCGl6gWt-286yvIeAPI_Ps-J8NCdmoOkuW8dT9i_EKC7ab0fOg668zyMXNEhOAIVTNdE90kiJKcepj3WTHath-2_FRcVFqjXtNZ1pzks/s320/Florin_Paramount%20Reflections%20I%20copy.jpg" width="269" /></a></div> <p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>Paramount Reflections I</i><br />Oil on canvas<br />36x30 inches<br />Sold</p><p style="text-align: left;">This reflection painting of the Paramount Building in Times Square is one of 3 paintings sold to a corporate collection in Manhattan. new painting literally just off the easel. This diner is a longtime
mainstay in the neighborhood and I always enjoy meeting an artist friend
for lunch to chow down and talk shop. Back in the 1980's I remember
seeing the artist Romare Bearden there as his studio was nearby. I will
be installing this and other paintings at the cozy LIC Corner Cafe next
week and they will be on view through the month of November. Stop in if
you're in the neighborhood, have a bite to eat and enjoy the artwork.

Shrouded in netting and scaffolding for years, I often wondered as I walked by what the facade would look like when it was removed. I'm happy to report that he old hotel, built in the late 1880's, looks gorgeous and happily is still standing. So many creative people spent time here over the years, adding to its allure and mystery. Got lucky when getting the paintings over to the venue with the help of a friend as it had rained heavily this morning and it had stopped by the time we were to head over to the site. Thank goodness for small favors. With multiple artists drilling nails into multiple walls, the place was a cacaphony of sound. Unwrapping, going and down the step stool, raising and lowering paintings while hanging, drilling...my back feels the effects of the last several hours. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to the next 4 days of the Fair and hope it will be a good experience all around.<br /></p>SJFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03937836189978908532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5970944483188202199.post-79545201566815184972023-08-29T09:01:00.000-07:002023-08-29T09:01:04.183-07:00Superfine Art Fair NYC 2023<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD14DQWk8MWiwWZW3fbUZ3_B-iCCTn0BGdvXHXN1bX8yA6VnjTupYfC47w_cNY9mG4r-dmNfrhgJ8-AixvMuhfKZFKH-yyuRuYGo92qkPdTmprKborc8VWbA-HfNQrbLRDU_Ovvp3DNi2EvFyixW5ob7ZufNZRVWYCZum2heWf4MO623ey30wotrlTVuMv/s1255/Sharon_Florin_SB%20on%2023rd%20Street_24x124_oil%20on%20%20canvas_2016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1255" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD14DQWk8MWiwWZW3fbUZ3_B-iCCTn0BGdvXHXN1bX8yA6VnjTupYfC47w_cNY9mG4r-dmNfrhgJ8-AixvMuhfKZFKH-yyuRuYGo92qkPdTmprKborc8VWbA-HfNQrbLRDU_Ovvp3DNi2EvFyixW5ob7ZufNZRVWYCZum2heWf4MO623ey30wotrlTVuMv/s320/Sharon_Florin_SB%20on%2023rd%20Street_24x124_oil%20on%20%20canvas_2016.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i><b>SB on 23rd St</b></i><br />Oil on canvas</p><p style="text-align: left;"><span class="break-words

The other day I received an email inquiry from a gentleman who buys the contents of storage units and this painting was included in one of his recent purchases. Asking for information about this painting, I dug back into my files and provided the following information. Sold in 1983 to a company in North Carolina it remained there until the company relocated. It was sold to another collector who had it hanging in her son's room for many years. She wrote to me when she retired and relocated in 2007 asking for information. Fast forward to 2023, it was discovered safely stored in a storage unit and thankfully has found a new home. The gentleman who contacted wrote: <i>We find all types of things but this is 1 of the best items we have seen
and will be in our personal collection, it is our pleasure and the
painting is captivating! </i>I'm very happy this painting has held up well and will continue to be enjoyed by this new collector.<i> </i><br /></p><p style="text-align: left;">Now on to the second painting, <b><i>59th Street Bridge Reflections II</i></b>. Painted in 2014 it depicts reflections of the 59th Street Bridge (renamed the Ed Koch Bridge although most people still refer to it by its former name). After being exhibited in several gallery shows I listed it on the saatchiart.com site. Lo and behold, I received an email telling me the painting had just sold. Packed, shipped and received by a new collector in South Africa last week.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbnrlyWu14cNo2Bsyl_X3Z-rT7VfDhSI5UbGY0pFQ_UtaFAhfcXHzY9SXWLfdGgJyWIDjyaJmL_kTjP3Pq_a8c7JUmKOHUSsbdW3AYHyncmzDWxwGAnXnQCoa4ALrl4qIKlyleidW86B7D-8NHZInuC7G5y7za4Gim1lSC4nxaQBQGpZYuchF0fWieaw/s792/Squared_Florin_59th%20Street%20Bridge%20Reflections%20II.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="792" data-original-width="792" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbnrlyWu14cNo2Bsyl_X3Z-rT7VfDhSI5UbGY0pFQ_UtaFAhfcXHzY9SXWLfdGgJyWIDjyaJmL_kTjP3Pq_a8c7JUmKOHUSsbdW3AYHyncmzDWxwGAnXnQCoa4ALrl4qIKlyleidW86B7D-8NHZInuC7G5y7za4Gim1lSC4nxaQBQGpZYuchF0fWieaw/s320/Squared_Florin_59th%20Street%20Bridge%20Reflections%20II.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>59th Street Bridge Reflections II</i><br />Oil on canvas<br />24x42 inches<br /><span style="color: red;">Sold</span></p><p style="text-align: left;">Once my paintings are sold and leave my studio they take on a life of their own. An unlikely joint in Manhattan's Chelsea district, this funky and distinctive bar/restaurant makes me smile whenever I pass by. The antique neon signage, an old beat up tire, some models lounging, taking in the city's hustle and bustle. It's always a treat finding one of these places as right next to it a new glass block long building is currently under construction. This place will be dwarfed by its new neighbor when completed but hopefully will stand proud and firm on 23rd Street. Wishing you all a peaceful, happy and safe holiday season.<br /></p><p><br /></p>SJFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03937836189978908532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5970944483188202199.post-21514054019598295702022-12-01T09:33:00.002-08:002022-12-01T09:33:58.159-08:00LouLou on Eighth Avenue<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu4UOjURYd5081fnumkE3Qm3TYJvWdlxN6g1AcrJtHXekG8YMxbv5JU_P-x35oqlA1WSq8vmvaUh0_IR87j5EzOMGVz8xskKtEsU9dgb7H8MYjuGQMYYgzDgOBJq0XAI20HhUt6waWAuDUgVoAeBEXqIlTBZehDMsIwhjnUTG5YJMb0JAml49LhhifVw/s1080/LR_Lou%20Lou%20on%20Eighth%20Avenue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1065" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu4UOjURYd5081fnumkE3Qm3TYJvWdlxN6g1AcrJtHXekG8YMxbv5JU_P-x35oqlA1WSq8vmvaUh0_IR87j5EzOMGVz8xskKtEsU9dgb7H8MYjuGQMYYgzDgOBJq0XAI20HhUt6waWAuDUgVoAeBEXqIlTBZehDMsIwhjnUTG5YJMb0JAml49LhhifVw/s320/LR_Lou%20Lou%20on%20Eighth%20Avenue.jpg" width="316" /></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><i>LouLou on Eighth Avenue</i><br />Oil on panel<br />8x8 inches</p><p style="text-align: left;">On Eighth Avenue in Chelsea there is a corner restaurant festooned with multicolored blooms which change seasonally. I admit to being a sucker for those crystals as I've always enjoyed my jaunts to the lighting district in the Bowery and have been inspired to create a painting. Thank you to artist Fran Beallor for selecting my work, this eclectic exhibition features art in many mediums and styles, a real mixed-bag. I was delighted to see my painting hung prominently in the front of the gallery and visible to passers-by. The opening reception was crowded and noisy, a real throwback of sorts to the gallery openings common in pre-Covid times.</p><p> <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
