This new painting explores once again, the old reflected in the new. A fancy, modern building reflecting one of the older buildings in the ever changing Chelsea neighborhood that is till standing along with a reflection of the always iconic Empire State Building which often shows up in my work. A great subject.

Had a delightful studio visit recently with artist Allan Gorman and photographer Ben Asen, both of whose work I greatly admire. A reflection painting of the Long Island City Courthouse was in progress on the easel when Ben snapped this photo. Just finished this painting and ready to move on to the next one. Always wonderful to share my art with kindred spirits.

Just finished this painting, an interior for a change. I was sitting in the mezzanine of the Lyceum Theater waiting for the curtain to go up for "Oh Mary" when I noticed this view and immediately thought of Edward Hopper. In a way this painting is my homage to him. I also couldn't help thinking of my friend Denis who I know would have loved this show as he didn't miss anything that came to Broadway and beyond. There's always a reason behind why I choose my subjects. Every picture tells a story.

Last Saturday I had a delightful studio visit with a lovely couple who had seen samples of my paintings in the neighborhood and were fans. We spent 2 hours going through the racks, pulling out paintings to consider. I shared stories about each one and they in turn, being native New Yorker's, had stories to share as well about growing up and living in New York. This 1987 painting is the one they ultimately chose. I came up with this title as it referred to the time of day, the shadow cast on the Met Life building and the thought of some worker's 5 o'clock facial shadows at the end of the workday. I'm thrilled that it is going to a good home where I hope it will be enjoyed for many years to come.

 

 

46 Years and Counting - Another Studio Anniversary

May 12, 2026 marked my 46th Studio Anniversary in Long Island City, Queens, New York.

The Graybar Building

This is a recently completed commissioned painting of the Art Deco styled Graybar Building located at 420 Lexington Avenue next to Grand Central. Opened in 1927, the building was designated a 
New York City Landmark in 2016.

One can see some impressive figures on different sections of the facade

An 1870's Long Island City home

This small study is of an 1870's home that can still be found on a Long Island City side street amid all the new glass boxes and luxury condos that abound. Yet another new building is slated to begin construction just next door. The old and the new, side by side.

Whew! I think I'm going to call this one finished.

A few months ago my friend Dianne was celebrating a big birthday and a visit to the top of the Empire State Building had been on her bucket list. Her friend Nancy organized a visit and surprised her by inviting some friends to come along. I took loads of photos and felt this one was worth painting. It was late afternoon on a windy, chilly day and the sun was casting a golden light on the Chrysler building and beyond,. lighting up many familiar sites in this detailed filled painting. Worked on this one for 3 months and it was a challenge

I've been spending some time scanning transparencies of some older paintings and thought I'd start sharing a few. Back in the late 1990s I met Paula at an exhibition and when she saw my reflection paintings she very kindly invited me to visit the office where she worked on 3rd Avenue in Manhattan as there were some great views. I took her up on the offer and created several paintings from the photographs I took that day. "Crystal Reflections I" and "Crystal Reflections II" were views from the conference room and these paintings were later purchased by the firm and hung in that very same conference room Each measures 36x24 inches, oil on canvas and were completed 25 years ago.

A recently completed painting of what I think might have been a former ballroom in Harlem. Always on the lookout for interesting architectural details, I spotted this decorative work on a building that was looking a bit tired but still standing proud in this uptown and storied neighborhood.

More Reflections in Long Island City

It's been a long, hot summer so far and sometimes difficult to move the paint around in the oppressive heat. I did manage to complete this painting of some reflections I found in Long Island City near Queens Plaza. Once again, the ongoing construction does yield some interesting views. The colors and the abstract forms in this painting create an enigmatic look at the urban landscape. Here's hoping for some cooler weather in which to start working on my next painting.

A Quintessential New York View

This painting was exhibited at the recent fair that I participated in at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A young man stopped to talk and was delighted to see this painting as it is what he sees when he goes up to his roof. After the fair I received an email from his mother as he had told her about my work. She purchased this painting as a birthday gift for him and he couldn't have been more pleased. It is always so gratifying to find just the right collector for a particular painting.

45^th Studio Anniversary Celebration

The month of May marks 45^th years that I’ve been a working artist in my Long Island City studio. A lot of paintings have been created near to the northlight window, out which I’ve watched the neighborhood’s urban landscape change dramatically year by year. I’ve documented these LIC changes in well over 100 paintings of the neighborhood along with many other favorite subjects of the New York City urban landscape. Love those architectural details and reflections.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary I am having prints made of my recent painting Waiting at Grand Central, a quintessential New York City scene. This particular painting has received a wonderful response both online and when it was shown at a recent art fair during which it was sold. So many people inquired if there were prints available of this painting that I decided to go ahead and have them produced.

I’m working with a printer to create high-quality prints with an image size of 10.5x14 inches, matted size of 20x16 inches which is a standard frame size. The price is $250.00. If you would like to purchase a print, just let me know.

In addition, during the month of May, I will having a studio sale with many paintings both old and new available at discounted prices. If you would like to arrange a studio visit we can find a good time for you to come by and hopefully leave with an original “Florin” painting in hand. The studio is located on Jackson Avenue in LIC, one block away from MoMA PS1 and easily accessible by subway.

Delighted that this older painting of the NYC urban landscape as seen from above has found a good home. With artwork it just can time to find just the right collector for the piece and in this case it has come to pass. I know they will enjoy this painting for many years to come.

 

I will be participating in the Super Fair NYC Art event at the Brooklyn Navy Yard next week and I'm busy in the studio packing up the paintings I plan to exhibit. Took a ferry ride last week to get my bearings as even though I'm a native New Yorker, I'd never visited this particular historic Brooklyn location.

The Always Fabulous Chrysler Building

I never tire of painting one of my all-time favorite NYC architectural gems. The Chrysler building still stands gleaming and distinctive on 42nd Street in midtown and can be seen from many vantage points around the city. When I caught sight of these reflections I knew I would have to create yet another painting and after spending more time than usual I'm glad I've accomplished my goal. I'm not a fan of all of the glass boxes sprouting up but the facades do create wonderful opportunities to capture views of older buildings in abstracted and unusual ways in the urban landscape of the city.

 

Talking Art

 

On a snowy February 20th, I had the pleasure of attending a reception and talking about my 5 reflection paintings installed in the Lobby of 215 West 125th Street in Harlem, a few door down from the Apollo Theater.  My work is showing alongside the paintings of Valeri Larko and Gwenyth Leech, two very talented artists. We 3 explore in paint the New York urban landscape with our own unique and individual styles. This installation will be on view through August, 2025.
